“Ya gotta have heart, all you really need is heart”
When you’ve suffered a heart attack, these words suddenly take on a whole new meaning. It needn’t be the beginning of the end. It can be the beginning of a second chance.
It’s time to take stock of your life, identify areas of your lifestyle that can be improved, and make the changes to ensure that you have many happy and healthy years ahead of you.
Have a loving heart; don’t leave saying “I love you”, you may regret the delay. Show affection and gratitude, give thanks at every opportunity. Forgive and forget, don’t bear grudges, they’ll eat away inside you. Wear a smile for everyone, you’ll be surprised how many you get back. Spread joy and happiness wherever you go.
Be positive in your approach to all aspects of your life.
Find a job you enjoy doing, and you’ll never have to work again. It’s surprising how much easier it is to manage on a reduced income when you enjoy your employment
Stress, worry and overwork will become things of the past – the old you heading for a heart attack. No more Monday morning feelings, each day at work will be a joy, something to look forward to every day. You’ll get all the job satisfaction you need to put a spring in your step and joy in your heart.
Be creative in your hobbies and pastimes; put your heart into all your projects and enjoy them. It doesn’t matter if you don’t create a masterpiece, just create. There are plenty of night school courses if you feel that you need help and encouragement. You’ll be spending your time with likeminded people, who will enthuse with you and encourage you, as you will them. Gardening is a very rewarding pastime, your efforts are visible throughout the year. If you don’t have a garden, you may find space for pots and containers or window boxes. Indoor plants are a good alternative generating oxygen throughout the day.
Socialise for the shear pleasure of it; a glass or two of red wine is good for the heart. Humour and laughter have long been considered the best medicines. Share your joys as well as your frustrations. Be a friend and accept the friendship of others.
Relax, there’s no need to rush. If you can, take up yoga, tai chee, or other relaxation and meditation techniques. Or just lie down and listen to soothing, relaxing music. Visualise a favourite place whilst you listen; take yourself off to the tropics, the beach or the countryside. Really be there; feel the sand between your toes, the coolness of the rippling water, hear the birds, the wind rustling through the leaves. Enjoy the sights and sounds of nature and take pleasure in them for the little miracles that they are.
Being more active needn’t involve joining a gym, doing repetitive exercises and pumping iron. Wear a pair of comfortable shoes and get walking. If you go to the shops, park your car as far from the centre as you can and walk in. If you take the bus, get off a stop or two early and walk the rest of the way. If you haven’t already got one, consider getting a dog, or offer to walk friends and neighbours dogs.
Take the stairs not the lift. Never mind saving your legs in doing just one trip, save your heart and make several. Dancing is a great exercise; you don’t need go to the disco. Put the radio on, or the hi fi, and just dance, let the music take you.
Look at your diet and make changes to go for the healthy options. Include more fruit and fibre and wherever possible go for wholefoods. Cut down on fats and dairy products and red meat. EAT MORE FISH, especially oily fish high in the omega oils, for a healthy heart. If you must nibble keep a good supply of healthy alternatives handy, seeds and sprouts, chopped vegetables like carrots with raw peas and sweetcorn. A little bit of what you fancy does you good, but do keep it to a little bit.
Foods that take a while to chew and digest are a good idea, your brain will get the message that you are full before your plate is empty. Add garlic to your recipes, it’s great for the heart. Dry roast your potatoes and parsnips, grill rather than fry. Steam your vegetables for a short time keeping them crisp and retaining their vitamins and minerals. If you do need to use fat or oil, opt for olive oil as a healthy alternative, and even then use sparingly. Reduce or cut out salt, add herbs and spices if more body and taste as needed, or use the low sodium salt alternatives that are now so easily available.
Don’t suppress your emotions; you only get treated as you allow yourself to be treated. If someone upsets you, tell them. They may not be aware of the hurt they are causing you. Don’t be afraid to show your vulnerability and humanity, your compassion, sensibility and sensitivity whenever the occasion dictates. Express your appreciation and gratitude and encourage others to show theirs. Accept a compliment and thanks with the grace that they are given.
Take heart and remember that you are a very special and unique person, the world needs you.
