In today's mini presentation, I will explain how to eat right for fat loss.
In addition to eating right, you also have to drink right. Adequate levels of hydration are critical for digestion, metabolisation, assimilation of foods and excretion as well as detoxification. All these factors are crucial if you wish to lose weight. Also, it is well known that very often the sense of thirst and hunger are confused. It has been shown in many instances when someone is hungry that when they drink a glass of water they are no longer hungry. With this in mind adequate hydration can help to prevent over-eating. According to Dr Batmanghelidj, who wrote “Your body’s many cries for water”, drink your body weight in Kg’s x 0.033 = litres daily or ½ your body weight in fluid ounces divided by 35.2 = Litres daily to consume. That includes any Herbal tea that doesn’t contain sugar or caffeine!
It is essential to be hydrated, so avoiding dehydrating drinks and to select good quality waters that contain good mineral content and are not toxic is crucial. Once you are hydrated, you can focus on eating right.
So how do you eat right?
Well, if you were a car would you run on Petrol (gasoline), Diesel or L.P.G? I know you are not a car, but I wish to use a simple analogy to explain a point.
I'm sure you either have a car or know someone that does. Let me for now assume you have just bought a bright shiny new car. What fuel does your car use? Let me make another assumption that your car is fuelled by petrol (gasoline).
In your excitement having picked up your new car you drive to the nearest petrol (gas) station to 'feed' your new pride and joy. However, in your excitement you accidentally fill it with Diesel. You drive out of the petrol (gas) station and 300 yards down the road you hear a bang, smoke starts pouring out from the bonnet (hood) and your car comes to a grinding halt.
Quite clearly filling your car with the wrong type of fuel caused it to break down.
The same thing happens to Human being and all other forms of life when they feed themselves the wrong types of foods/fuel. It may take a little longer for the smoke to come pouring out and for us to come to a complete stop. Before the complete stop we tend to develop chronic degenerative dis-eases, like obesity which is very prevalent today. Naturally any weight gain is caused by STARVATION! We just don’t provide our bodies with what it requires on a cellular level and keep feeding it the SAD CRAP stuff (Standard American Diet – Caffeinated, Refined, Alcohol & Processed products).
As you are aware, feeding your body with the wrong types of fuel is a major cause of excess body fat.
I use Metabolic Typing with my clients to achieve amazing results. Metabolic Typing is finding out which foods are right for you and consuming the right proportions.
Ancient Greeks and Romans, Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine all recognised many years ago that each person has different nutritional requirements.
Weston A. Price, an American Dentist travelled the world to find healthy civilizations to study in the 1920's and 1930's. His findings were published in his book, "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration," and his findings where the beginning of the understanding of metabolic typing in modern times.
Price found that where ever he found civilizations whom ate a traditional non-westernized diet where in almost perfect health. He then found civilizations close by who had begun to consume what he called white man's food (mainly white sugar, processed flour, hydrogenated fats and pasteurised dairy) suffered from increased body fat and many types of diseases requiring medical attention.
However, if a sick individual returned to his native tribe and native diet, the illness and diseases were reversed in most instances.
Francis Pottenger, Dr. Roger Williams, and Dr. George Watson have all played a role in developing Metabolic Typing as it stands today. More recently, William Wolcott has taken over the mantle of metabolic typing and is seen as the world authority today.
It should be noted, the number of so called 'weight loss experts' is increasing, as are the number of Doctors, Nutritionists, exercises professionals, weight loss products and foods (in the form of low sugar and low fat) and new drugs and surgical procedures. However, in modern societies, we are becoming more unwell and the number of people becoming overweight or obese is increasing at an alarming rate. In fact Dr Robert Verkerk refers to it as the, “Human time bomb” and it’s mainly related to the lack of good foods.
You know we can “only lead a horse to water”. It’s a choice if want to truly lose weight, feel better, gain more energy, sleep properly, etc, etc. So many people settle for their habitual signs and symptoms and continue on with their lives until they reach the PAIN state. Why wait for that, why not take control today and make whatever changes you know will improve your health and those around you.
Please allow me to share with you a recent clients case. This member of our health studio (20 months) called Maureen has created three major wins in her life. When she started with us back in 2007 she was ‘labelled’ as an insomniac! and had been for at least 6 years. Her simple change was to stop having any drink or food that contained caffeine after 2pm. Bingo, at the end of her then 6 week programme she not only gained much more confidence, but she also removed/reversed her poor sleep patterns. Please understand that everyone is an individual and I’m not for one minute saying that if you have created poor sleep pattern sin your life that this will stop if you remove caffeine after 2pm! There may be many factors which allow your body not to recover properly due to poor lifestyle choices. Back to Maureen’s story… About 4/5 months ago she over heard me ‘reminding’ a member at one of our Optimum nutrition consultations that 70% of the worlds population is Lactose intolerant. Maureen had been suffering from a bloated stomach and cramps as well as diarrhoea for nearly 2 years. She immediately decided to remove Milk from her diet and chose lactose free milk (again I’m not saying this is better alternative or will be the panacea of your leaking gut syndrome). Within 24 hrs all her signs and symptoms has been removed/reversed!
In an email she sent to me about three weeks ago, she decided to remove Gluten! She said in her email… “I took the decision to try and go wheat free, and have to say what a difference! I've had no virtually no wheat for the past ten days. Another success story, apart from the obvious advantages I now manage to stay awake all day at least until 10 pm. Thank you.” She also lost 1 inch from around her waste and is still losing more weight from he stomach area!
Wow, so we congratulated her on making these changes, exactly on time and reaping the rewards, because her physical body never lies!
Let’s be clear gluten has only been on the human menu for less than 10,000 years. It contains compounds that damage your intestinal wall and can lead to leaky gut syndrome! We have on our website alternatives to any PRODUCT that contains this or sugar or pasteurisation or salt, or soy/a or processed oils, or sweeteners! These are as a reminder the 7 SINS, which will bring more misery to your life in the long term… I know they can taste good! HEALTH is A CHOICE FOLKS!
And now onto a recipe
Heavenly Hummus
Legumes are an amazing source of both fibre and protein, and are vastly healthier than any animal protein. In my family we go through hummus like mad, and it can get expensive to buy store-bought hummus (also spelt Houmous) when you have a girlfriend who practically drinks the stuff!
Hummus can be made with either dried or canned chickpeas/garbanzo beans. Soaking your own dried beans not only costs substantially less, the beans retain more of their nutritional value, and are not overloaded with sodium. Plus, they just taste better when prepared fresh. Still, if you’re pressed for time, canned beans can be used. Be sure to rinse them several times if you do to remove some of the salt.
When using dried beans, follow either the quick-soak method, or soak overnight.
Quick soak: Cover beans with several inches of water, bring to a boil, and boil for two minutes. Take the pan off the heat, cover, and let stand for two hours. This is not part of the cooking process – this is just soaking. You’ll still need to cook for 1.5 hours when you’re ready to prepare your recipe.
Overnight soak: Cover the beans with several inches of water and let stand in the refrigerator (so that they don’t ferment) for a minimum of 8 hours. It’s fine to soak for up to 24 hours, so you can start your soak in the evening, and then cook them the next night (or anytime during the day, of course).
To cook your beans: use two-to-three three cups of fresh water or homemade vegetable stock for each cup of dried beans. Bring to a boil, reduce to simmer, and partially cover the pot. Cook for 1.5 hours, periodically skimming any foam off of the top. You can also cook garbanzos (or any legumes) in a pressure cooker.
A note about authentic hummus: Most store-bought hummus and hummus recipes call for a lot of olive oil. This isn’t actually the authentic Middle Eastern preparation. No oil is used when cooking or blending, but only drizzled over the top right before serving. It can also be left out entirely, which is how I prefer to eat it. To get a creamier consistency to your hummus, adding water is more effective than adding additional oil when you’re blending. Extra olive oil can actually overpower the other flavours.
