Statins - the real story…
By inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, (which is what Statins do!) not only do they greatly curtail cholesterol production but they interfere with and block more than a dozen liver-related molecules. All of these chemicals have some role in our body’s chemistry, and ironically some of them are known to be particularly beneficial to our functioning hearts.
The most important of these is enzymes is co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10). CoQ10 is essential in producing energy in our bodies. It is indispensable for cardiac function, and lowered levels have a plethora of negative health effects throughout the body, especially in the muscles and nervous tissue.
Statins will lower cholesterol: there is no disputing that fact! They inhibit an enzyme, HMG-CoA reductase, that the body needs to make cholesterol. Please remember that Cholesterol is NOT the PROBLEM! The body is stressed and will therefore increase Cholesterol in order to repair the damage you are causing in excess. As I stated a few Health Ezines ago it’s your Homocysteine levels that are critical to health or dis-eases.
Please remember that lowering cholesterol and preventing and curing heart disease are two different things! In 50% of all heart attacks cholesterol levels are normal. That means in some studies, although Statins reduced cholesterol levels, they failed to reduce heart attacks or overall mortality…. Doh! In others, heart attacks were prevented, but at rates that were not particularly impressive given the hype, the expense and the toxicity of Statin drugs. Remember too that most DRUGS at best will reduce or remove your symptoms, just like an taking an aspirin (although killing over 20,000 people yearly) can remove your headache.
Statins also act as anti-inflammatories, which is the only one benefit I can think of if you’re taking them!
Statins were FDA approved in 1987. By 1990 prominent CoQ10 researcher Peter H. Langsjoen, MD, reported on studies he had conducted with Statins, showing that they also inhibit the production of CoQ10, but that if patients took CoQ10 supplements along with their medications, a great deal of damage could be avoided. In 2001, he and other leaders in CoQ10 research sent an urgent letter to the FDA asking for action. None ever came. Even today most doctors prescribing Statins without CoQ10 are unaware of the damage they are doing to their patients. In my OPINION any Dr that prescribes a Statin and does not prescribe CoQ10: s/he must be struck off the medical register.
Meanwhile, deaths attributed to heart failure more than doubled between 1989 and 1997. CoQ10 deficiency caused by Statins is the probable cause. In 2002, Dr. Langsjoen said, "I have seen a frightening increase in heart failure secondary to Statin usage . . . Over the past five years, Statins have become more potent, are being prescribed in higher doses, and are being used with reckless abandon in the elderly and in patients with 'normal' cholesterol."
Muscle pain and weakness is the most common complaint found in Statin-takers. The industry says it affects only 1-3%, however practitioners have reported it in at least 30%, and Dr. Beatrice Golomb, who is researching the effects of Statins in San Diego, found this symptom in 98% of those taking Lipitor and 1/3 of those taking Mevachor, both Statin drugs.
Statin manufacturers themselves have recognised that Statins depress the immune system. Ever alert for possibilities of making even more money, they have advocated using Statins for transplant surgeries to depress immunity so the foreign heart or other organ is not rejected.
Many side effects don't occur until weeks and sometimes years after commencing the drug. Cancer is one long-term side effect that may be missed because most human studies with Statins are time-limited, but in studies with rodents Statins have caused cancer, and in one human study, breast cancer rates went up 1500% among Statin-users.
Neuropathies, cataracts, pancreatitis, plantar fascitis, stomach ulcers, insomnia, dizziness, tremors, loss of libido, impotence, joint pain, vertigo, hepatitis, and dry, "crocodile" skin have all been linked with Statins. Do you want more information about the uselessness of one of the biggest Medical cons on this planet?
