So many people suffer with arthritis now, this should not be the case. The massage workshop demonstrates self-massage for prevention, relief and cure of the dis-ease.
Siew is a RGN, RM, Acupuncturist (classical, medical and needlefree,) Reiki Master and Remedial Masseur.
Arthritis is a progressive disease therefore treatments and self-help strategies are more effective the earlier they are started. 9 Million people in the UK suffer from Arthritis which causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints, muscles and bones of the body.
Siew Allen is an experienced massage therapist, working from the Jesson Clinic, who will demonstrate how to use self-massage to make your joints and muscles flexible to prevent Arthritis and guard against repetitive strain injuries. Early action in both conditions can prevent further deterioration. Siew will pass on the secrets of self-massage, empowering you to learn how to invest your own time in
your health and well-being.
There is no cure for Arthritis but treatments can help to manage
symptoms to enable those suffering from Arthritis to continue to lead
active lives. There are over 200 different forms of Arthritis the
most common being Osteoarthritis which affects 8 million people in the UK and Rheumatoid Arthritis which affects 350,000. It most commonly develops after the age of 40 and Rheumatoid Arthritis is three times more common in women than men. The causes of Arthritis are not known but there is thought to be a genetic factor involved although just
because grandmother suffered from it does not necessarily mean you will.
The symptoms of Arthritis are pain and stiffness in the joints which can become swollen and hot occurring at first in the hip or finger joints. In Osteoarthritis lumpy bone growths often appear on the knuckles of the hand. The pain of Arthritis can cause disrupted sleep and as it becomes worse leads to difficulty in walking, bending down and turning handles or taps.
The symptoms are generally worse first thing in the morning, easing off as the joints loosen with movement but becoming worse again in the evening from carrying weight during the day.
Exercise, rest and warmth will all help and therapeutic massage is a well-used method of relieving tension in muscles and easing wear on our joints. By adding the practice of therapeutic massage to our lifestyle we can help to combat Arthritis.
Prevention is the key so it is not too late to start now and learn all you can from the talk and demonstration by Siew Allen on Thursday, 18th February, at The Castle Street Centre starting at 7.00 p.m. You will come away with lots of self-help techniques to make your fingers, hands and knees more flexible and pain-free. Massage is a drug-free method of relieving pain and the only cost to you is your time.
If you care about your body and health you may want to invest an evening in learning from a qualified therapist how to manage your own symptoms to live pain-free.
TLC Kendal is dedicated to bringing you the knowledge to take control of your own health and wellbeing so come along and learn about Arthritis and how to make choices in your treatment.
